व्याधेस्तत्वपरिज्ञानं वेदनायाश्च निग्रहः।
एतद्वैद्यस्य वैद्यत्वं न वैद्यः प्रभुरायुषः॥
समयोचितपद्यमालिका॥

etadvaidyasya vaidyatvaṁ na vaidhyaḥ prbhurāyuṣaḥ||

The doctor and the patient and all others too should always remember this..

The capacity and the dexterity of the doctor is limited to understanding the nature of the illness, and mitigation or reduction of pains and suffering of the patient..
However the doctor is not the owner or controller of life..

Yes, when the time arrives for departure, even the best medication and treatment would not be enough to retain or save the life of the patient..
Believe it or not, everyone has to die.. die the way god or nature decides..
This is not meant to belittle the importance of doctors or the science of medicine..
But even with the best facilities on hand we have to expect the worst and perhaps accept the worst too..
വ്യാധേസ്തത്വപരിജ്ഞാനം വേദനായാശ്ച നിഗ്രഹഃ।
ഏതദ്വൈദ്യസ്യ വൈദ്യത്വം ന വൈദ്യഃ പ്രഭുരായുഷഃ॥

ചികിത്സിക്കുന്ന വൈദ്യനും ചികിത്സ തേടുന്ന രോഗിയും മറ്റുള്ളവരും എല്ലാം താഴെ പറയുന്ന കാര്യം എപ്പോഴും ഓര്‍ക്കേണ്ടതാണ്.
വൈദ്യന്‍റെ കഴിവും സാമര്‍ത്ഥ്യവും വൈദഗ്ധ്യവും എല്ലാം രോഗത്തിന്‍റെ പ്രകൃതിയെക്കുറിച്ചും രോഗി അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന വേദനകളും വൈഷമ്യങ്ങളും കുറയ്ക്കുന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ചും ഉള്ള കാര്യങ്ങളില്‍ മാത്രം ഒതുങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്നതാണ്.
വൈദ്യന്‍ ഒരിക്കാലും രോഗിയുടെ ആയുസ്സിന്‍റെ ഉടമയോ, അത് നിയന്ത്രിക്കുന്ന വ്യക്തിയോ ആവുകയില്ല.

അതെ, ഒരാള്‍ ഈ ഭൂമി വിട്ടു പുറപ്പെടാനുള്ള സമയം വന്നെത്തിയാല്‍ പിന്നെ എന്ത് ഔഷധം പ്രയോഗിച്ചാലും, ഏതു വിധത്തിലുള്ള ചികിത്സ നല്‍കിയാലും അതൊന്നും അയാളുടെ ജീവന്‍ രക്ഷിക്കാന്‍ പര്യാപ്തമാവുകയില്ല.
ആരും ഇക്കാര്യം വിശ്വസിച്ചാലും ഇല്ലെങ്കിലും, അംഗീകരിച്ചാലും ഇല്ലെങ്കിലും ഒരു വ്യക്തി ദൈവവും പ്രകൃതിയും നിശ്ചയിക്കുന്നതനുസരിച്ച് മരണത്തിനു കീഴടങ്ങുക തന്നെ വേണ്ടിവരും.
ഇത് പറയുന്നത് ഭിഷഗ്വരന്മാരുടെയോ, വൈദ്യ ശാസ്ത്രത്തിന്‍റെയോ പ്രാധാന്യം കുറച്ചു കാണിക്കാന്‍ വേണ്ടി ഒന്നുമല്ല.
പക്ഷെ എന്തോക്കെ ചികിത്സ ലഭിച്ചാലും, എത്ര വിദഗ്ദമായ പരിചരണം കിട്ടിയാലും നമുക്ക് പലപ്പോഴും മരണം സംഭവിക്കാം, നമുക്ക് മരണത്തെ പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കുക തന്നെ ചെയ്യേണ്ടിവരും.
