Mahabharatham is here attempting here to define what real friendhsip and kinship are . Without saying so much in words, here it is indicated that a real friend or relatvie is one who is genuinely close to us, and not the friends and relatives created and displayed by society.
The meaning of the slokam is
Whichever person, even if he is not closely connected and even if he is not having any social ties with you, if he is always remaining as your friend, if he is ever eager to maintain such close and sincere friendship with you, is to be considered as your own close relative, your own kin. Indeed he is your friend, and close camarederie with him is the right path, the right route map, for your life. That friendship and connection is something that should be ever nurtured, praised, cherished and kept permanent.
यः कश्चित् whoever person असंबद्धः even if not closely connected, not having and ties सन् अपि being too मित्रभावेन close affinity as friend वर्तते maintain, is being सःhe एव alone बन्धुः is relative , तद् मित्रं that alone is friendshi सा गतिः to have such friends is your privilge and route map for life तत् परायणं भवति that friendship is something that should be nurtured, praised and maintained for life.
