A very respected and knowledgeable senior friend asked for my suggestions regarding acceptance of friends in Social media..
I thought I can share my note for consideration of a wider audience too..
Respected anna, I want to strike a note of caution..
During my long stay in social media, so many persons have become my web friends..
My test for acceptance was always that their profile or posts do not contain too obnoxious materials..
Usually my policy was to accept all and never to decline..
So even without my knowing many would have entered my circle (the number of friends is 3700 plus as of now) and I cannot vouchsafe for the tests that I expect you to apply.. being a very senior person with a lot of knowledge and experience..
If the friend in my circle is appearing in my timeline often then you can be sure that he or she is harmless..
Nothing bad can happen by accepting such persons as friends..
In fact except for a few friends and relatives who are friends even otherwise, I do not communicate with people even through my message box..
The usual pestering and nuisance messages and suggestions appear through chat boxes and when a message which is not of standard, I just warn the person and in worse cases unfriend and block him too..
But then at your senior age you should be even more selective..
You can be generous with words.. but not with any materials or cash.. because after sometimes requests for promotion of trusts, donations etc can appear.. and you should respond only if you are sure otherwise,, not through Facebook or social media alone..
Exploitation through sweet words and suggestions is so common around here..
